Could Texas football soon be losing DB Jahdae Barron?
This is a really crazy night for the Texas football program and second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian on May 2 concerning some of the top players on this team and the NCAA Transfer Portal. We should also include the wild west that is the world of NIL now as a cause of the headlines for Texas concerning the transfer portal early this week.
Sark and the Longhorns staff apparently had to already stave off a sizable NIL offer from another Power Five program this spring to retain the rising sophomore star wide receiver Xavier Worthy. Texas looked to do a nice job keeping Worthy’s focus on this program and not really facing any danger of him entering the transfer portal this spring.
Yet, that might not be the case with the projected starting defensive back and rising junior Jahdae Barron. It looks like there is still a chance that Texas could be losing Barron to the transfer portal this spring, despite his name not officially surfacing on the transfer market coming out of the weekend.
The University of Texas does have roughly 48 hours, though, to process the transfer request. That leaves May 3 essentially as the last date to watch for big names to appear in the portal among those that intend to test the waters on the transfer market while retaining immediate eligibility for the 2022 season.
Texas football in danger of losing DB Jahdae Barron to the portal?
Moreover, while Texas appears to have officially retained Worthy through the spring portal deadline for immediate eligibility from what we can tell at this moment, the same can’t be said for sure concerning Barron’s portal status yet. We’ll have to wait likely at least for the morning of May 3 to confirm if he’s sticking around in Austin through the spring deadline.
A report from Horns247 on May 2 (paid content) indicates that Barron also got a significant six-figure NIL offer to leave Texas for another FBS program this spring. And it sounds like Texas is still working to retain Barron, at least as of the evening of May 2.
As more time moves along on this night, though, it feels like there is increasing confidence that Barron will stick around with the Longhorns. But that is mostly an educated guess based on speculation and rumors at this point.
We’ll continue to follow these developing portal storylines for the Longhorns in the hours ahead. Barron will certainly be a name to watch concerning the transfer portal in the next 24 hours.
If he does stick around with Texas for the coming season, Barron is likely to be the starter at nickel. He looked to be helping Texas form a pretty potent starting group in the secondary that also includes senior Anthony Cook and junior Kitan Crawford.
