Texas football losing another WR to the portal in Marcus Washington
Second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion just lost another player in the receiving corps from the Texas football program to the NCAA Transfer Portal post-spring ball. A report from Inside Texas on the morning of May 2 indicates that Texas is expected to lose the rising senior wide receiver Marcus Washington to the transfer portal this week.
If Texas does wind up losing Washington to the transfer portal this week, he would be the third wideout to leave the program since the conclusion of spring camp last week. But Washington would be the most experienced wideout that the Longhorns lost to the transfer portal this spring.
Texas has also lost the likes of redshirt sophomore Kelvontay Dixon and redshirt freshman Dajon Harrison to the portal from this wide receiver room in the past week. Washington would also technically be the fifth wide receiver to leave Texas for the transfer portal since last fall.
The other two transfer departures for Texas since last fall at the wide receiver position included redshirt junior Joshua Moore (signed with SMU) and senior Al’Vonte Woodard (signed with Sam Houston State).
Texas football could be losing their third wideout in the last week with Marcus Washington entering the portal
Washington saw his role increase last fall for the Longhorns. He saw his number of offensive snaps more than quadruple last season compared to the prior two years. Washington got more than 430 offensive snaps last fall.
In the process of getting a career-high number of offensive snaps last season, Washington registered 18 catches for 277 receiving yards (15.4 yards per catch) and two touchdown catches. That gives him 25 catches for 366 receiving yards (14.6 yards per catch) and three touchdown catches in his three years in college to date.
Moreover, Texas is also losing one of their better blockers at the wide receiver position with Washington expected to enter the transfer portal. He was the highest-graded wideout in run blocking last season.
Texas will now have another void to fill in the receiving corps, specifically at the Z-wide receiver spot with Washington leaving to enter the portal. Washington was likely going to backup the former Wyoming Cowboys rising redshirt sophomore wide receiver transfer Isaiah Neyor at the Z spot this fall.
Sark, Marion, and the Longhorns might now be seeking out more help via the transfer portal with Washington potentially leaving the program. It will be interesting to see how these numbers play out in the days and/or weeks ahead.
Washington entering the transfer portal this week now adds to the attrition of the 2019 Longhorns recruiting class. Texas now only has six of its 26 signees remaining from the 2019 class on the roster. Granted, one of those signees graduated from Texas recently with the former JUCO transfer and senior edge rusher Jacoby Jones finishing out his career on the Forty Acres.
