3 former 5-Star recruits Texas basketball should target in the portal
Honorable mentions
I do want to preface here that all the five stars in the portal that are mentioned that could be targets for the Longhorns this offseason aren’t publicly noted in connection with the program thus far. Each portal player would likely be a new connection for the Longhorns to form.
Bryan Antoine, SG
The most underachieving former five-star recruit on this list is the New Jersey Native and former Villanova Wildcats junior shooting guard Bryan Antoine. Villanova and the now-former head coach Jay Wright couldn’t capitalize on the insane talent that Antoine brought to the table out of Ranney School.
In his three seasons playing for the Wildcats, the most productive for Antoine came during the 2020-21 campaign where he averaged barely over two points per game and 1.2 rebounds. This is definitely a situation where Antoine needed to find a change of scenery after the retirement of Wright.
Keyontae Johnson, F
A potential reclamation project that Beard and the Longhorns could take on out of the portal this offseason involves the former Florida Gators one-time All-SEC redshirt junior wing Keyontae Johnson.
It wasn’t all that long ago that Johnson was one of the rising standouts in the SEC. During the 2019-20 season, Johnson averaged 14 points per game, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal while shooting 54 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc.
Mouhamed Gueye, PF
Among the more touted freshman former elite recruits to be in the transfer portal at the moment is the former Washington State Cougars first-year 6-foot-11 and 215-pound forward Mouhamed Gueye. Wazzu saw Gueye have a solid freshman campaign last season, but that obviously didn’t stick enough for him to return for next season.
Gueye could give Beard and the Longhorns a very lengthy and gifted forward that is a solid inside scorer, fierce and energetic defender, and an efficient rebounder. There’s a lot of value that Bueye could bring to the table for Texas over the long haul.
