Through the first few weeks of the offseason, it seemed like second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff were not very active in the NCAA Transfer Portal to try and immediately build up the roster for the Texas football program heading into 2022. But that quickly changed once the Early Signing Period came and went last December.

Sark and the Longhorns staff broke their quiet streak in terms of pursuing some of the top players in the transfer portal around the turn of the calendar year. And they were really able to get some key players to upgrade the skill positions on the offensive side of the ball during the winter.

Texas has five players they’ve landed out of the portal so far this offseason, with four coming on offense and one on defense. The four on offense include the former Wyoming redshirt freshman wide receiver Isaiah Neyor, Alabama freshman wide receiver Agiye Hall, Ohio State freshman quarterback Quinn Ewers, and Alabama junior tight end Jahleel Billingsley.

And the one addition out of the portal on the defensive side of the ball so far this offseason came in the form of the former Ohio State redshirt freshman cornerback Ryan Watts.

If you’re counting preferred walk-on additions to the program via the transfer portal, you could also include the versatile former Montana senior wide receiver/special teams weapon, Gabe Sulser.

But Texas also has some misses that are starting to pile up in the portal this offseason, especially among their defensive targets. Texas has missed on a lot more portal players on the defensive side of the ball than on the offensive side.

With that in mind, here’s a look at three of the biggest transfer portal whiffs for the Longhorns so far this offseason.
