As the regular season starts winding down, head coach David Pierce and the Texas baseball program are getting set for one of their final weekend series of Big 12 play. This coming weekend, Texas is traveling to Morgantown to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers on the road in a three-game series.

This three-game weekend series against the Mountaineers is going to be more important than originally anticipated for Pierce and the Longhorns. As this Texas team ran into some tough times of late, they need to start establishing momentum now to firmly start trending in the right direction heading into the postseason.

There aren’t many opportunities remaining for the Longhorns during the regular season to build up momentum for the Big 12 Tournament and Regionals.

Moreover, Texas is coming off a convincing win over the Houston Baptist Huskies by a score of 13-3 in seven innings. Texas downed Houston Baptist at home at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on May 3. That win over Houston Baptist gives the Longhorns a record of 32-16 (9-9 Big 12) heading into this weekend series against West Virginia.

Meanwhile, West Virginia comes into this game sporting a record of 27-16 (9-6 Big 12) after a 3-2 win over Charleston (WV) at home back on May 4. West Virginia is sitting on a three-game winning streak dating back to their series win last weekend over the Kansas Jayhawks.

Here’s a look at the betting odds, TV/streaming information, and game prediction as Texas gets set to face West Virginia on the road in Morgantown in this weekend series, with the opener set for May 6 at 5:30 p.m. CT.

Texas baseball vs. West Virginia betting odds

There are no betting lines and/or over/under odds in yet for the Texas-West Virginia game on May 6 from WynnBet. But Texas does have the seventh-best odds still to win the College World Series, despite getting bounced from the top 25 this week.

Meanwhile, West Virginia is barely inside the top 50 among the teams with the best odds to win the College World Series at this point of the season.

Texas baseball vs. West Virginia pick

Pierce and the Longhorns need a positive result this weekend following a tragic showing last weekend where they were swept at home at the hands of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Texas’ pitching staff couldn’t keep from collapsing on itself for much of the weekend in three straight losses to the Pokes.

There might not be a duo of pitchers in the Big 12 that have a more important stretch of games in terms of how they need to bounce back heading into the postseason than Pete Hansen and Tristan Stevens.

Texas will have their ace and redshirt sophomore left-hander Hansen starting against the Mountaineers in Game 1 of this weekend series. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that Stevens will get the second start of the weekend. But that is not set in stone as of this moment on the afternoon of May 6.

In his last start, Hansen gave up six earned runs and nine hits in seven innings of work on the way to a no-decision against Oklahoma State in the series opener last weekend. Hansen will need a better outing to help ensure a Texas win over West Virginia in Game 1 of this weekend series.

Texas can at least get more favorable seeding in the Big 12 Tournament in a few weeks if they can top West Virginia and Kansas in their final two weekend series in conference play. That all starts with getting a much-needed win over the Mountaineers on May 6.

Final score prediction: Texas-6, West Virginia-4
