The most impactful addition for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program out of the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason will likely be the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers. Texas got their first commitment out of the transfer portal this offseason in Ewers, which came back in early December.

And once Texas landed a commitment out of the portal from Ewers, along with the departure of the former redshirt junior starting quarterback Casey Thompson, it was presumed that Sark and his staff found their next starter. It just didn’t seem like Texas would be getting Ewers out of the portal if it was not planned for him to be the next starting quarterback.

While it’s clear that Ewers is going to be an impactful portal addition for Sark and the Longhorns no matter what, we don’t know how he’ll be able to elevate the overall success of this team in the win column this coming season. Ewers still needs to effectively take the reins of this offense by the fall and prove that he is capable of spearheading this team in 2022.

Moreover, it is interesting to see where Ewers ranks in the broader spectrum of transfer quarterbacks this offseason. Depending on who you talk to, many would consider Ewers potentially the most impactful quarterback transfer of the offseason so far.

New Texas football QB Quinn Ewers slotted as the second-best QB transfer so far this offseason

A ranking of the top quarterback transfers so far this offseason from On3 certainly holds Ewers in high regard. This list of the top quarterback transfers this offseason from On3 ranked Ewers as the second best, only behind rising sophomore former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Caleb Williams.

Williams stuck with head coach Lincoln Riley and transferred to USC earlier this offseason.

Here’s more on what this list from On3 had to say on the placement of Ewers at No. 2.

"The Quinn Ewers Project never took off in Columbus. After arriving to fall camp late and seeing nearly no game action, he transferred to his home state. While Steve Sarkisian has yet to announce a starting quarterback, all eyes will be on Ewers this fall."

The brief write-up here for Ewers in this On3 piece seems to have the same sentiment as most other Longhorns fans. No matter what, it feels like Ewers has to be named the starting quarterback at some point this fall. It’s just too difficult to find a path where rising junior quarterback Hudson Card clearly wins the starting job in 2022.

The progress we witnessed from Ewers during spring ball for the last couple of months is an encouraging sign that he’s headed in the right direction to soon win the starting job for this coming season.
