A constant throughout this recruiting cycle for the Longhorns thus far is the importance of making a strong impression on the highly touted four-star DeSoto wide receiver Johntay Cook. Texas continues to make Cook one of the top priorities for their 2023 class post-spring. And that will continue to remain the case heading into the summer months.

Cook looks to be the clear-cut top target for the Longhorns 2023 class at the wide receiver position. He could be the headliner at wideout in this class along with other touted blue-chips such as Niblett.

Assuming Texas does get one of the official visits from Cook this summer, getting the last word with him likely won’t be as important as it is with Toviano. Texas already has roughly a half-dozen unofficial visits with Cook as of the end of spring camp.

Texas already had plenty of opportunities to make big moves in the race to land a commitment from Cook. This is now the point in time when Sark and the Longhorns staff have to prove with the supporting cast in this 2023 class and with some strong early signs that this team will be effective on the field this fall.

Seeing those strong early indicators that Texas is making the proper strides to get this program headed in the right direction will be more important than anything else with Cook.

It would also help for the Longhorns to land a commitment from the final elite target of the 2023 class on this list if they really want to seal the deal with Cook as he’s likely going to announce this summer.

Texas should be considered the favorite in the race to land a commitment from Cook at the moment. But you can’t count out the likes of Texas A&M, Florida, and Alabama quite yet.
