The most hyped-up addition for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program so far this offseason is definitely the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers. Texas landed a commitment out of the NCAA Transfer Portal back in December from Ewers, which presumably gives them their starting quarterback for at least the next couple of seasons.

Granted, there is still a looming quarterback competition where Ewers will have to prove himself to win the starting job this fall over rising junior Hudson Card.

Most Longhorns fans are expecting Ewers to win the starting quarterback job pretty early on in fall camp. Thus, Sark and quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee must ensure that Ewers is ready to handle what is a loaded non-conference schedule for Texas right away during the regular season.

Moreover, the fact that Ewers made some necessary strides to build up the confidence that he can effectively assume the reigns to lead this offense over the course of spring camp for the last couple of months got this fan base excited about what’s to come. Ewers seemingly progressed week in and week out during spring camp, with a few anticipated hiccups along the way.

Given the progressions we’ve seen from Ewers thus far, it makes sense that the hype is building around him ahead of the start of the 2022 season.

That was evident in a recent list post from Pro Football Focus on social media this week. PFF named Ewers one of their breakout candidates for the 2022 college football season.

Texas football transfer Quinn Ewers listed as the only QB on PFF’s breakout candidate watch for 2022

This list included seven players in total as potential breakout candidates for the 2022 campaign. And Ewers was the only quarterback to make the list.

Some of the other significant names here were the Alabama junior wide receiver Jermaine Burton, Stanford junior running back E.J. Smith, and Texas A&M sophomore center Bryce Foster.

It is also worth noting that Ewers is one of the youngest breakout candidates on this list from PFF. He is one of three second-year players on this list with the other two being Notre Dame redshirt freshman offensive tackle Blake Fisher and Penn State redshirt freshman guard Landon Tengwall.

But Ewers is the only one on this list to have only appeared in one game in his collegiate career to date. Ewers only took a couple of live-action snaps last fall with Ohio State, which came late in a blowout win over Michigan State.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12), missing out on bowl season for the first time since 2016. Ewers and the Longhorns are set to open up the 2022 regular season on Sep. 3 against Louisiana-Monroe.
