Texas football remains optimistic with Jordan Addison after USC visit
We continue to anxiously await what happens for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion, and the Texas football program in pursuit of the top target out of the NCAA Transfer Portal at this point of the offseason. Texas is seemingly putting everything they have into the recruitment of the reigning Biletnikoff Award winner and the former Pitt Panthers sophomore star wide receiver Jordan Addison out of the portal this spring.
Addison is the biggest and brightest star in the transfer portal post-spring ball around the college football landscape. And the Longhorns look to be in a top trio of schools in the Addison sweepstakes as he goes through this transfer process.
The other two schools to watch in the race to land a commitment from Addison out of the portal at this point of the offseason are the USC Trojans and Alabama Crimson Tide. He’s already taken official visits with the Longhorns and Trojans.
In fact, Addison was in southern California for an official visit with new head coach Lincoln Riley and USC this weekend. His official visit to USC concluded on May 15.
Alabama is anticipated to get an official visit from Addison in the next couple of days/weeks. There is a chance, though, that Addison will announce his decision prior to getting an official visit on the books with the Crimson Tide.
Texas football still in the running for Jordan Addison after his USC OV this weekend
Moreover, there were many that anticipated Addison committing to the Trojans during his official visit with Riley and his staff this weekend. USC was considered the odds-on favorite to win the race to land a commitment from Addison out of the portal heading into the weekend, despite Texas making a positive impression on him earlier in the week upon his OV in Austin.
But the fact that USC didn’t come out of this weekend with a commitment from Addison does have to be considered positive news as it relates to the Longhorns. And while this doesn’t necessarily mean that Texas is now the presumed favorite to win the Addison sweepstakes, it does show that Sark and Marion still have a shot with the Biletnikoff winner.
A report from Orangebloods on May 15 (paid content) confirms the notion that it is at least encouraging news for Texas that Addison isn’t committed to USC as of yet. This report also mentions an interesting nugget that Addison could be waiting to see if the Ohio State Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day enter the race to win his commitment out of the portal.
If Ohio State gets in the mix here, that would really shake things up for both Texas and USC with Addison in the next few weeks.
To sum this all up, it is good news for the Longhorns that Addison still remains uncommitted following his official visit to USC this weekend. And while it looks like there is a chance that Addison takes another visit or two, this is going to be a highly-competitive pursuit of Addison out of the portal from the trio that includes Texas, Alabama, and USC.
Texas is clearly making Addison their top priority out of the portal this spring. If Texas is able to nab a commitment from Addison out of the portal at some point this offseason, that would be the third scholarship transfer wideout the Longhorns add in 2022 and the fourth overall if you include preferred walk-ons.
