Evaluating 3 important summer enrollees for Texas football
Brenen Thompson, WR
Among the more highly touted Longhorns signees in the 2022 class that’s remained in the midst of headlines lately is the speedy four-star Spearman (TX) wide receiver Brenen Thompson. Thanks to a solid finish to his high school football career and some electric sprints in track in the last few months, Thompson has shined of late.
Thompson ran an insane sub-10.3 second 100-meter dash time at the UIL 3A state meet last week, which took first place in that event in that class.
He’s continued to flash insane speed in his track and field events in the last few months, which has heightened the excitement and anticipation that the Longhorns faithful have in preparation for his arrival in Austin this summer. Thompson’s speed is something that should flash right away for the Longhorns this fall.
It’s hard to see Sark and the Longhorns staff not finding a way to get the ball in Thompson’s hands in the open field at least a few times early this fall. He could also be utilized as a special teams weapon right away on kick and/or punt returns.
But this summer will also be about Thompson continuing to hone in his speed and agility while putting on more size to his frame. At 5-foot-10 and 165-pounds, this blue-chip speedster does need to add some weight before he’s ready to take on blocking assignments and run some physical routes against Power Five defenses.
It is my belief that Thompson might be the most exciting addition for the Longhorns among the summer enrollees. His insane run in Texas high school track in the last few months continues to highlight just how much spark he could add at the skill positions for the Longhorns this fall. That is also a spark that he could bring right away to the special teams unit.
