The lone addition for the Longhorns out of the transfer portal so far this offseason is the former New Mexico State Aggies senior shooting guard Jabari Rice. Texas was looking to add some experienced two-way depth to help replace the losses of key upperclassmen such as Ramey and redshirt senior shooting guard/wing Andrew Jones.

And that’s exactly what they’re getting in the gritty and proven three-time All-WAC guard Rice. As one of the more switchable guards/wings on defense in the WAC in the last few seasons, Rice is going to bring a good amount of versatility and defensive stability to the table for the Longhorns next season.

Rice is also a respectable spot-up shooter and someone that can create his own looks as a tertiary playmaker. He’s not usually going to be the primary facilitator of the offense, but he can certainly do some damage off-ball.

If Texas can see Rice find the rhythm shooting from the field and beyond the arc that he had from 2019-2021, then they’ll be getting a very efficient scorer. Rice shot around 37.5 percent from beyond the arc, 46 percent from the field, and 82 percent from the free-throw line. He just had a bit of a down 2021-22 campaign shooting from the field (39 percent) and beyond the arc (34 percent).

Depending on how the rest of the roster shapes up ahead of next season, Rice could be in line to hold a key sixth or seventh man role. And if he shines at the outset of next season, it’s not out of the question for Beard and the Longhorns to give him the start at the two or the three.
