Honorable mentions

Jehlani Galloway

There aren’t many wideouts left in the transfer portal at this point of the offseason with any sort of proven production under their belt that the Longhorns could seek out. But there are some that have some production and intriguing efficiency metrics in the last couple of seasons that the Longhorns could try to maximize as depth players.

That would have to be the case if Marion and the Longhorns got an offer out to the former Boston College Eagles junior wide receiver Jehlani Galloway. Over the last two seasons, Galloway registered 18 catches for 215 receiving yards (11.9 yards per catch), and two touchdown catches.

The 5-foot-11 and 190-pound Galloway could be a depth addition as either a slot wideout or someone playing at the x spot.

Matt Polk

There are two former Oklahoma State Cowboys wide receivers that have some potential that are still available in the transfer portal in sophomore Matt Polk and freshman Jonathan Shepherd. But the focus here is on Polk.

Texas could be getting an underrated outside receiver that has a good amount of potential to bring down some 50/50 balls that could also be a solid depth piece in the 6-foot-4 and 200-pound Polk.

With the injury-prone sophomore Troy Omeire likely to backup Isaiah Neyor on the outside this fall, Texas could use the long-term insurance policy of signing someone such as Polk.

DeAngelo Gibbs

The idea of the Longhorns going after a multiple former blue-chip recruit to add to the wide receiver room would accomplish a different task than with most of the targets I’ve mentioned here.

But since Texas would have to expand the idea of what they’re looking for in the portal at this point of the offseason to add to the receiving corps, I like the thought of them going after the former Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers senior safety/wideout DeAngelo Gibbs.

This former elite Georgia safety recruit never really got a chance to shine with the Vols after spending a few years in Knoxville. He was a rotational player for the Vols defense during the 2019 season and wound up sitting out all of 2020.

And then, Gibbs wasn’t even listed on the roster for the Vols throughout much of 2021.

If Texas were to take a flier out on Gibbs, it would not be the first time that this coaching staff added a former SEC blue-chip recruit that had a high ceiling at one point in time but couldn’t find traction at his previous landing spots. That is what the Longhorns did last year with the likes of edge rusher Ben Davis and linebacker Ray Thornton.

Maybe Gibbs could be a more impactful version of those two.
