Joey Hobert

Among the more underrated wideouts that are still available in the transfer portal at this point of the offseason is the former Washington State Cougars sophomore Joey Hobert. While Hobert didn’t get much of a shot to make an impact for Wazzu since 2020, he’s made the most of his opportunities when they arrived.

In the last two seasons, Hobert has registered more than 220 receiving yards on 18 catches (good for around 12.5 yards per catch) and one receiving touchdown. What’s even more impressive is the fact that Hobert did that while taking just over 110 snaps on passing plays since 2020.

Hobert would not be the type of wideout that would come in and make an immediate big splash impact on this receiving corps. But he could add valuable depth as one of the more reliable backup wide receivers on this roster.

The fact that Hobert has one of the five best drop grades in the PAC-12 in the last two seasons along with one of the best offensive grades for Wazzu among their wideouts goes to show how valuable he can be in spots. Hobert didn’t have a single drop on 24 targets and 18 catches in the last two seasons.

Cjay Boone

I’ve mentioned this a few times so far in this list of potential portal wideout targets for the Longhorns in the latter stages of the spring, but it’s clear that Sark and Marion will have to dig deep to find value on the transfer market after missing on Addison. And that gives the Longhorns staff one particular one they can take to find value in the portal at the moment.

If Texas could find a speedy and elusive wideout that just wasn’t able to find the right scheme fit at the previous landing spot, but Sark and his staff find a fit in Austin, that is a viable strategy at this point of the offseason in the portal. That’s why it makes sense for the Longhorns to go after the former Mizzou Tigers and New Mexico Lobos speedy and versatile sophomore Cjay Boone.

The 6-foot-3 and 175-pound Boone is the perfect example of an extremely speedy skill position weapon that just never really found a home at any of his previous landing spots. But this is a player that was previously timed running around a 4.3-second 40-yard dash time, which is insane.

That type of speed might be something that Sark and the Longhorns can work with. Boone still has a few years of eligibility remaining, including the COVID-19 redshirt year.
