In the midst of a weekend that has very much gone as planned thus far for head coach David Pierce and No. 22 ranked Texas baseball, this team is looking to get back on track ahead of the Big 12 Tournament. Through the first two games of this three-game weekend series against the Kansas Jayhawks at home, Texas looked great as they took the series on May 20.

By knocking off the Jayhawks by the final score of 8-1, Pierce and the Longhorns won their second game in this series, thus clinching the series altogether. Texas has now downed the Jayhawks in the first two games in this series by a combined margin of 15 runs.

On May 19, the Longhorns defeated the Jayhawks by a convincing final score of 12-4.

And now, the Longhorns will look to sweep this series against the Jayhawks in what will be the regular season finale on the afternoon of May 21.

Texas will be looking to pull off the sweep behind the hot bats of stud infielder Ivan Melendez and outfielder Eric Kennedy. Melendez helped to spark the Longhorns’ offense yet again with his nation-leading 28th home run of the season in the win over Kansas on May 20.

Melendez extended his home run streak to three games on May 20, and he extended his RBI streak to a whopping nine games. He also has an impressive six home runs in his last seven games.

Kennedy was the main source of offense, though, for the Longhorns in their comfortable seven-run win over Kansas on May 20. He came up with a team-high three runs batted in on two home runs and three hits. Kennedy also had two runs scored and one strikeout on the night.

Moreover, if Melendez, Kennedy, and the Longhorns can continue to produce runs at the level they have of late, Texas should have no problem pulling off this series sweep of the Jayhawks on May 21 to cap the regular season. A win over Kansas to round out the regular season would mean Texas heads into the Big 12 Tournament having won five in a row and nine of their last 10.

That would surely be a nice way to cap what was an otherwise rocky regular season for a Longhorns team that entered the 2022 campaign with the top ranking in the country.
