As we move close to 100 days from kickoff for the 2022 Texas football season, we’re going to continue to see expectations form from the fans and media alike. And that process has already started for some, especially with spring ball coming to a conclusion a few weeks ago.

One member of the college football media landscape that gave his take on the status of the Longhorns for this coming season is 247Sports national analyst and host of the “Late Kick” podcast Josh Pate. This weekend, Pate mentioned the Longhorns along with the Clemson Tigers as two of his most “interesting” teams for the 2022 season.

Pate noted that Clemson and Texas were two of the most interesting teams in the country this year for one major reason. And that is due to how much uncertainty there is for each respective team this fall.

Essentially, it looks like Pate believes the margins between the floor and the ceiling for each team in 2022 are very large.

While this is a valid point to make from Pate, he does get expectations for the Longhorns out of a hand a bit when he talks about potential fan reactions to a seven or eight-win 2022 campaign. He seems to think that if Texas does win seven or eight games this fall that fans are going to react adversely toward second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian.

I don’t really believe that will be the case.

If Sark and the Longhorns are able to wrap up the 2022 season with at least eight wins, it’s hard to see a world where most fans on the Forty Acres are very upset. Winning eight games would clearly be a sign of progress for this team under Sark and his staff.

Even winning seven games would be a decent improvement over last season, where the Longhorns came up with just five wins and missed bowl season for the first time since 2016.

Texas finished up spring camp with the altered version of the annual Orange-White spring football game back on April 23. Sark and the Longhorns are set to open up the 2022 regular season at home on Sep. 3 against Louisiana-Monroe.
