Defensive back will be a particular area of emphasis for the Longhorns during the official visit season next month. Four-star San Antonio-William J. Brennan safety Tyler Turner joins a group of roughly a half-dozen blue-chip defensive backs that are expected to visit Texas in the next few weeks.

Granted, this visit with Turner will come with an asterisk in the last few days as he recently released his last of his two finalist schools including the Oklahoma Sooners and Oregon Ducks.

At the moment, Turner is still scheduled for an official visit with the Longhorns on June 17. But it will be interesting to see if he keeps Texas on his summer trip schedule after announcing Oregon and Oklahoma as his top two schools on May 20.

Nonetheless, if Texas is still willing to keep Turner on the books for an official visit this summer, that means they still see something that could bring value to the table for the 2023 class. And for that reason, we will continue to evaluate him until the coaching staff takes him off their board and visitor schedule.

The 6-foot and 180-pound in-state safety is one of the harder hitters in this 2023 class and he has exhibited traits in his game in the last year or so that could see him continue to rise up the recruiting rankings. Turner showed improved speed and ball skills last season to add to his already impressive skill set which features solid fundamental tackling ability and a high level of physicality in defending the run and the pass.

If Turner can show that type of consistency during his senior season at Brennan, he’ll likely be considered one of the best in-state defensive backs coming out of this recruiting class. For Texas to land a commitment from him would mean adding depth and a potential well-rounded safety to this secondary.

The problem for the Longhorns with Turner might end up being numbers. Texas sits in a good position at the moment with four-star safety Derek Mitchell and has four-star Arlington-Seguin safety Jamel Johnson committed in the 2023 class. Safety numbers could be getting thin soon.
