In the last few months, the NCAA Transfer Portal played a big role in how this offseason has transpired so far for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program. Texas is now up to a half-dozen additions out of the transfer portal so far this offseason in terms of scholarship players. There is also one preferred walk-on they’ve added out of the portal in the former senior grad transfer Montana wide receiver Gabe Sulser.

Sark and the Longhorns have lost many more players to the portal than they’ve gained since the start of the spring, though. Texas lost more than a half-dozen players to the portal in the five days following the conclusion of spring ball alone.

That’s not to mention the roughly dozen portal losses for the Longhorns since late last fall.

Diamonds in the rough that Texas football can find in the portal entering the summer months

This leaves Texas in a position to still be seeking out help to add depth in positions of need on each side of the ball just ahead of the start of summer workouts. Texas appears to mainly be seeking help at linebacker, edge rusher, and defensive back at this point of the offseason.

After the Longhorns landed a commitment out of the portal from the former Iowa State Cyclones senior wide receiver Tarique Milton last weekend, Texas looks to be set in the receiving corps. If you include walk-ons, more than half of the transfers Texas landed so far this offseason came at the wide receiver position.

With that in mind, here’s a look at four diamonds in the rough that the Longhorns can find in the portal entering the summer.
