Offense averages 45 points per game

Texas did have an effective offense last season, but it wasn’t up to par with some of those that Sark commanded in past years as an offensive coordinator or head coach. Sark and the Longhorns averaged a little north of 35 points per game last season, good for 18th in the FBS.

Yet, considering the fact that the Longhorns allowed more than 31 points per game, good for 99th in the FBS, the 35 points per game scoring pace wasn’t enough to get this team over the hump. In fact, it wasn’t even good enough to get this team bowl eligible.

We have seen past Sark-led offenses put up some pretty insane scoring numbers. For instance, the Alabama Crimson Tide ranked second in the FBS in both seasons where Sark was the offensive coordinator, putting up 47.2 points per game in 2019 and 48.5 in 2020.

Expectations shouldn’t get out of hand in this regard as some of the weapons Sark had to work with in the Alabama offense were more proven than what he’s got in the fold in Austin right now. But there really isn’t a huge difference in terms of the raw talent and explosiveness of the skill position weapons he’s got at his disposal on the Forty Acres ahead of next season.

It definitely is within reach for the Longhorns to average more than 40 points per game this season with a seemingly improved quarterback situation, better depth at the skill positions, and an offensive line that should be at least markedly better compared to last year. But it is a good goal for the Longhorns to put up at least 45 points per game this season.

With some of the question marks surrounding the defense this year, it will definitely be necessary for the Longhorns to average at least 40 points per game if they want to have any shot at making an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game.
