Texas beats OU twice en route to a Big 12 Championship

The goal that is likely on the minds of the Longhorns players and coaches for this fall that takes the most priority right away is contending for a Big 12 Championship. While it sounds nice for the Longhorns to contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff this season, that isn’t very realistic, even on a list of bold predictions.

The Big 12 this season looks to be pretty wide open. Some of the top contenders in the Big 12 from last season will have more question marks entering the 2022 campaign. For instance, the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Baylor Bears have both dealt with some of the most intense roster attrition of any of the Big 12 teams this offseason.

Also, the Oklahoma Sooners dealt with a ton of roster turnover after the departure of former head coach Lincoln Riley, who bolted to take the same job with the USC Trojans late last fall.

Thus, Texas will have an opportunity in a wide-open Big 12 to really climb up the conference standings this coming season. If Sark and the Longhorns can make some necessary strides to improve on both sides of the ball and show the ability to close out games with double-digit leads in the second half, then this team will be ready to start contending for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Texas will also have the chance to take down the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game this season if they can take care of business when it matters most. And if there is a Red River rematch in this hypothetical scenario for the Big 12 Championship Game this December, Texas could theoretically knock off the Sooners twice in the same season for the first time ever. It would also be only the third time that Texas and Oklahoma have played twice in the same season (first time since 2018).
