In the next few days, it sounds like we’re likely to get a decision from what looks to be the biggest target for Texas football in the NCAA Transfer Portal at the moment. The FCS All-American and former James Madison Dukes senior grad transfer linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey is anticipated to announce his decision by the end of the upcoming holiday weekend.

And considering how Tucker-Dorsey has only taken two official visits at this point of his transfer process, the Longhorns look to be sitting in a very good spot with him right now.

Texas and the UCF Knights were the only two programs that received official visits from Tucker-Dorsey since his name emerged in the transfer portal a couple of weeks ago. And that would indicate, among multiple reports, that Tucker-Dorsey is very likely deciding just between these two schools.

If he was considering other potential landing spots out of the portal, this decision probably wouldn’t be coming as fast as it is.

Multiple reports in the last week or so have indicated that Tucker-Dorsey was expecting to make a decision by this upcoming holiday weekend. Essentially, that put his decision timeline to wrap up just ahead of the start of summer workouts around the college football landscape.

Moreover, there is a different feeling that we’re getting with this transfer target compared to other defensive portal players from earlier this offseason. Texas is getting more traction with Tucker-Dorsey compared to most other portal targets such as edge rushers Drew Sanders and Jared Verse.

The hope here is, though, that the Longhorns aren’t going to go through another saga similar to when they missed out on the former TCU Horned Frogs senior All-Big 12 edge rusher Ochaun Mathis. Texas looked like the favorite to land a commitment out of the portal from Mathis throughout much of the spring, but he ended up landing with the Nebraska Cornhuskers late last month.

There are some leading indicators showing up that would lead to the idea that Tucker-Dorsey is favoring Texas. First and foremost, it looks like his decision is soon to come out and that is coming just a few days after his multi-day official visit to Texas this week.

And there is also an expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction that was placed late this week in favor of Texas landing Tucker-Dorsey out of the portal.

Nonetheless, this will still be a highly anticipated decision as the Longhorns and Knights wait to see who Tucker-Dorsey will ultimately choose. Texas needs depth at the linebacker position, and Tucker-Dorsey will likely be one of the last viable impact players at this spot that will emerge in the portal for the rest of the offseason.

Texas has a half-dozen scholarship additions to the program by way of the transfer portal so far this offseason, with the latest coming from the former Iowa State Cyclones senior wide receiver Tarique Milton. Landing Tucker-Dorsey could bring Texas up to seven scholarship players out of the portal, which would likely get this coaching staff one step closer to finishing up the transfer market work this offseason.
