Projecting Texas basketball’s starting 5 with Tyrese Hunter
Texas basketball and head coach Chris Beard to a huge addition to the potential starting unit for next season entering the holiday weekend. On the afternoon of May 27, Beard and his staff landed a commitment out of the NCAA Transfer Portal from the reigning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and former Iowa State Cyclones stud freshman guard Tyrese Hunter.
This is definitely the biggest transfer portal addition of the offseason so far for Beard and the Longhorns. Hunter is also the second transfer addition for Beard and the Longhorns staff this offseason, with the other being the former New Mexico State Aggies three-time All-WAC senior shooting guard Jabari Rice.
But there will likely be more additions out of the transfer portal throughout the offseason for the Longhorns. Texas still needs help in other parts of this rotation before they’re ready to take the court in their new arena next season.
How will Texas basketball shape the starting unit after the addition of Tyrese Hunter?
Beard and the Longhorns have to be thrilled about how this backcourt is starting to round out, though, following the addition of Hunter entering the holiday weekend. Between the addition of Hunter and what Texas has in the 2022 signing class, the backcourt will definitely be one of the most potent in the Big 12 next season.
Texas could also have one of the best backcourts in the entire country next season depending on how the incoming freshmen are able to do out of the gates.
With all of this in mind, here’s a look into the projection of the Longhorns’ starting unit after the addition of Hunter out of the portal on May 27.
