3 SEC teams that should want to avoid Texas football, OU
Texas A&M
There is no other school that would be as valid to top this list that would want to avoid both the Longhorns and the Sooners in the SEC as the Texas A&M Aggies. And that is largely due to the niche that the Aggies found for themselves when they left the Big 12 for the SEC back in 201
Now, head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies are starting to reach new heights of success. This football program is starting to insert itself more firmly in the national conversation on a regular basis. And you can thank the recruiting efforts and player development of Fisher and the Aggies in the last few years for the boost in the program’s success on the field.
Yet, that doesn’t mean that the Aggies will welcome the competition of the Longhorns and the Sooners playing them in the SEC on an annual basis, especially in football.
Texas A&M probably wouldn’t gain anything in terms of success in the win column or success on the recruiting trail if Texas and Oklahoma were playing them on an annual basis in football. The same could likely be said for other Texas A&M profit sports such as basketball and baseball.
In fact, we’ve already seen various reports and discussions mentioning how the Texas A&M athletic department/administration is trying to keep away from ending up in the same division/pod as Texas and Oklahoma.
The Lone Star Showdown between Texas and Texas A&M, especially on the gridiron, would be a rivalry that most college football fans would love to see restored on an annual basis. But it seems like there is nothing but difficulties that the Longhorns and Aggies run into in terms of getting something on the schedule in the future to get the Lone Star Showdown revitalized.
We’re likely going to see the Lone Star Showdown come back around at some point in football. But it’s hard to tell if that will be in two, three, or even five years from now. Fisher and the Aggies would probably prefer to delay that for as long as possible.
