3 offensive Texas football players bound to detonate the stat sheet 2022
Xavier Worthy, WR
There is no doubt in the mind of any Longhorns fans that Worthy is going to be special in 2022. He was the most productive wide receiver for the Longhorns last season, and it should only get better from here.
There were multiple missed opportunities that the Longhorns had last season in the passing game getting the ball to a wide-open Worthy. Texas had multiple missed deep balls to Worthy, and his potential to get over the 1,000-receiving yard mark was doused by the fact that opposing defenses could double and triple-team him due to a lack of other options at the skill positions.
The Texas offense turned very one-dimensional throughout much of Big 12 play last season, especially once Whittington went down with injury. It also didn’t help that the offensive line didn’t get the likes of Card and Casey Thompson much time to let plays develop. That led to the quarterbacks rushing plays and throwing unfavorable passes to Worthy at times last season.
I would expect Sark and the Longhorns staff to find more effective ways to get Worthy the ball in space this coming season. Getting the ball in Worthy’s hands early and often can be down with multiple sweeps, screens, and glance routes with less of a focus for opposing defenses double and triple-teaming him.
Worthy won’t be counted on to shoulder the load for the entire offense this fall, which will lead to him maximizing the touches he does get game in and game out.
Moreover, with all the pressure that was on Worthy’s shoulders for much of last season, he still had an insane campaign where he was the best true freshman wideout in the entire country. Despite this immense pressure falling on a true freshman, Worthy still came up with nearly 1,000 total yards and a dozen total touchdowns.
Him getting close to 1,200 or 1,300 total yards and north of a dozen total touchdowns is realistic for Worthy this coming season, as long as he’s able to stay healthy.
