Meanwhile, Oklahoma comes into this Red River finale for the Big 12 Tournament sporting a record of 36-20 (15-9 Big 12) following their win over the Kansas State Wildcats to stay undefeated up to this point of the festivities in Arlington, TX. Oklahoma has beat the West Virginia Mountaineers, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Kansas State in their three games of the Big 12 Tournament thus far.

It looks like there’s a good chance that Pierce and the Longhorns could be hosting a Regional in Austin at this point. Texas has likely done enough to host a Regional at this point, as they currently rank No. 12 in the live RPI.

We don’t know yet who will be starting for the Longhorns in this Big 12 Tournament finale on May 29. It could be either the stud redshirt sophomore ace Pete Hansen or the rapidly improving and clutch Lucas Gordon. But Pierce could opt to work the rest of the staff and save Gordon and Hansen for regionals and go with another pitcher in this meeting with the Sooners.
That will leave a lot of the fate of this game in the hands of the Texas bats. Texas will need the likes of superstar Ivan Melendez and the talented middle infielder Trey Faltine to spark the offense to gain an edge on the rival Sooners.
Melendez isn’t having the greatest Big 12 Tournament by his usual standard. But that doesn’t mean he’s not effective thus far.
He is currently going through one of his worst offensive stretches of the season. We did finally see Melendez breakthrough, though, against the Pokes on the evening of May 28. He had two hits (including his first of the Big 12 Tournament) and one run batted in in the win over Oklahoma State to get the Longhorns to the final game.

Texas currently owns a record of 2-1 against the Sooners so far this season. Texas and Oklahoma already faced each other three times in Arlington for Red River during the regular season, which fell in favor of the Longhorns in some very close and exciting games. I see a tough game that Texas comes out with late to win the Big 12 Tournament by a three-run margin.
