3 former Texas football players that were poor fits with Kwiatkowski
B.J. Foster, S
A once-promising five-star safety recruit that just never lived up to the hype on a consistent basis for the Longhorns is the former senior starting boundary safety B.J. Foster. There is any number of issues that you could point to as to why Foster wasn’t successful down the stretch last season under Sark and Kwiatkowski. But the biggest issue just looks to be the lack of adaptability for Foster with this latest coaching regime.
Foster has all the talent in the world. And he showed a lot of flashes under Herman and former defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. But the production from Foster steadily got worse and worse with each new defensive coordinator that Texas hired in the last few years including Chris Ash and Kwiatkowski.
There were many times last season where it just looked like Foster didn’t care to put in the extra effort late in games and where his head wasn’t fully in the game.
Some other issues that existed for Foster in his first year playing under Kwiatkowski included his poor angles and approaches while attempting to tackle the ball carrier, a general lack of timing in pass coverage, and misreads in pass coverage. These are all issues that can either be traced back to a lack of preparedness for Foster and/or a poor transition into this new defensive scheme under Kwiatkowski.
I would generally expect the next starter at the boundary safety position for the Longhorns to provide a more consistent force to anchor the secondary than Foster did in Big 12 play last year. It looks like Texas will be starting super senior DB Anthony Cook at boundary safety this fall, with the former converted corner Kitan Crawford backing him up. Those are two solid options to boost the results at boundary safety this fall.
