Texas football hosts a successful visit with 5-Star DL David Hicks
The biggest visit of the week for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff among targets of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class is clearly the elite five-star Katy-Paetow defensive lineman David Hicks. Texas hosted Hicks on an unofficial visit on June 2 that apparently lasted for more than a few hours.
In the midst of a busy week of visits for Hicks, defensive line coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns hosted him for an important visit during the first week of the summer semester on campus. And it sounds like this unofficial visit with Hicks and his father went well by most accounts from what we’ve heard thus far.
Hicks got to visit with multiple coaches while being hosted by Davis throughout the day. That allowed the relationship between Hicks, his dad, and Davis to continue to flourish. It’s clear that there is a great connection between Davis and the Hicks family.
It sounds like Davis and the Longhorns staff left a good enough impression on Hicks and his camp that they want to make a return visit this fall. Multiple reports (including one from Inside Texas, paid content) are mentioning the massive early-season game between the Longhorns and defending National Champion runner-up Alabama Crimson Tide as the target date for their next visit to Austin this fall.
That will certainly be a crazy atmosphere for Hicks and his camp to be able to witness this coming season.
Davis and the Longhorns continue to face an uphill battle in the race to land a commitment from Hicks, though. We still get the feeling that coming out of this unofficial visit with Texas on June 2, other top schools such as the Texas A&M Aggies and Oklahoma Sooners still have an edge over the Longhorns in this recruitment.
The good news here, though, is that the Longhorns have plenty of time to make up ground. Texas already got one step out of the way in order to make some big moves with Hicks heading into the fall. They have the pieces in place now to get a return visit this fall.
Texas just needs to show the strides they’ve made as a program and how that translates to success on the field this fall. Elevated success in the win column this fall could be just what the doctor ordered for Texas to make up some ground with Hicks before signing day.
This unofficial with the Longhorns was one of multiple visits for him this week. He’s also already taken unofficials with Texas A&M and Oklahoma. And he’s now on his way for an official visit on June 3 with the Michigan State Spartans.
