3 Texas football players to watch in summer 7-on-7 drills
Brenen Thompson, WR
Summer workouts are going to be an absolutely critical point of the offseason for many of the newly enrolled freshmen that were part of the Longhorns 2022 signing class. And there might not be a more entertaining new addition for the Longhorns to watch in the on-field work during the summer than the former four-star recruit and freshman wideout Brenen Thompson.
As one of the most electrifying players in the 2022 recruiting class, Thompson is definitely going to be a first-year player that the Longhorns fans have their eye on. Texas fans are going to want to see what Thompson can do when he gets the ball and can make things happen in the open field.
The insane speed that he brings to the table as potentially the fastest recruit in the entire country for the 2022 cycle makes Thompson a polarizing player to watch this summer. And that’s why it’s important to pay attention to how Thompson is able to acclimate himself on campus in the next couple of months.
Thompson didn’t get the chance to show what he could do during spring ball as an early enrollee. Instead, he was lighting up the competition finishing out his high school track career.
The sub-10.30 second 100-meter dash speed is something that should light up the field during seven-on-seven work this summer. Thompson’s speed and agility should also be able to set him apart from the rest of the young wideouts on this roster during summer workouts.
On-field work during the summer could be the time when we start to see Thompson take hold of a role that could see him get some early reps this coming season.
Seven-on-seven ball will give Thompson the opportunity to start getting comfortable getting the ball out in space and getting to run some of the quicker and simpler routes out of the slot that he will have as a part of his route tree in this Sark offense.
