Ewers looking ‘more assertive’ than Card in summer 7-on-7s
In the midst of a busy week for the university, the Texas football program and second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian got summer workouts underway after the holiday weekend a few days ago. And ahead of the start of summer workouts this week, Texas welcomed more than 20 new enrollees to the program.
Despite the addition of so many new touted players in the midst of the first week of summer workouts, some of the same storylines that have shadowed over this program so far this offseason will remain. Sark and the Longhorns still have a quarterback competition on their hands that they have to figure out before a difficult non-conference slate this fall.
Texas is trying to see if the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback and elite five-star recruit Quinn Ewers can win the starting job over rising junior Hudson Card. Ewers looked to have the momentum on his side since the start of spring camp a few months ago to win the starting job over Card.
But there’s still a chance that Card could put up a good fight for the starting job in fall camp.
Texas football QB Quinn Ewers is “more assertive” than Hudson Card through first week of summer workouts
There is some news that shouldn’t be overlooked in the quarterback room in the midst of the first week of summer workouts, though. A report from Inside Texas this week (paid content) indicated that Ewers is “more assertive” than Card in summer workouts and on-field practice work so far.
Ewers is reportedly mainly looking more assertive and vocal than Card in the seven-on-seven workouts/drills in on-field practice work during summer workouts thus far.
Considering how vocal leadership and assertiveness are some particular areas where Card needs to improve this year, this is something that likely favors Ewers in this quarterback competition. In a world where Card wins the quarterback competition, that would largely be due to the fact that he is a lot more effective as a vocal leader this year compared to last.
It doesn’t appear he’s off to a good start in summer workouts in that regard, though.
Texas finished up last season with a record of 5-7 (3-6 Big 12), missing out on bowl season for the first time since 2016. Ewers and the Longhorns are set to open up the 2022 regular season at home on Sep. 3 against Lousiana-Monroe.
