Texas football’s offensive two-deep depth chart with summer enrollees
Tight end
Starter: Jahleel Billingsley OR Ja’Tavion Sanders
Backup: Gunnar Helm OR Juan Davis
One of the more underrated positions where the Longhorns have a good amount of depth is at tight end. After bringing in the former Alabama junior Jahleel Billingsley by way of the NCAA Transfer Portal, Texas has three or four different tight ends that could be worthy of getting some starting reps this fall.
But the top two in the depth chart early in summer workouts should be set in stone following their solid showings in spring ball. The former elite five-star recruit and rising sophomore Ja’Tavion Sanders looked great in spring camp and has likely earned himself starting reps in Week 1.
Meanwhile, it’s mind-boggling to think about the potential that Texas can have at the tight end position this fall if they can get the most out of the duo of Sanders and Billingsley. Texas has an NFL-caliber talent in the receiving game at tight end in Billingsley. And Sanders has the ability to make a big impact both in the receiving game and while blocking.
Texas is probably going to run with a good amount of 12 or even 22 personnel on offense this season. The potential starting duo of Sanders and Billingsley gives Sark the ability to successfully run this type of personnel package.
Moreover, the depth in the tight end room for special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and the Longhorns comes from having two stout underclassmen in the mix with Gunnar Helm and Juan Davis. The duo of Helm and Davis should also challenge to get significant live game reps this fall if they can both stay healthy and impress throughout the summer and in fall camp.
