Texas football’s offensive two-deep depth chart with summer enrollees
Quarterback
Starter: Quinn Ewers
Backup: Hudson Card
This is yet another position group that will not change for Sark and the Longhorns as it seems like the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer Quinn Ewers keeps seeing his stock trend up compared to rising junior Hudson Card. And it seems like it would take a lot for Sark and the Longhorns staff to give Card the starting job coming out of fall camp over Ewers.
There were definitely some flashes that Card showed during spring camp and in the altered spring football game a couple of months ago. But it definitely looks like this Texas offense will have a much higher ceiling with Ewers as the starting quarterback in Week 1 against Louisiana-Monroe compared to Card.
Something worth watching early this season, though, will be the potential scenario where Sark gives both Ewers and Card significant reps in the first week. Texas will at least have one game to get this offense in rhythm before they have to face the defending National Champion runner-up Alabama in the second week of the regular season.
Moreover, I would anticipate that we continue to hear good things about the strides that Ewers is making throughout summer workouts, especially given the additional on-field practice work and film study time that college programs are getting this offseason. That will definitely play to the benefit of Ewers as he can build more confidence heading into fall camp.
