Texas baseball gets rematch vs. Air Force to cap Austin Regional
The final opponent for No. 9 Texas baseball and head coach David Pierce is set to cap the Austin Regional at UFCU Disch-Falk Field for the weekend. Texas will get their second matchup against the Mountain West Conference Tournament Champion Air Force Falcons of the Austin Regional on the night of June 5.
This could be the first of two more meetings with Air Force in this regional, depending on how this game goes on June 5. Since Air Force lost to Texas in their first game of the Austin Regional, they will have to beat the Longhorns twice to advance to supers.
Yet, Texas will only need one win over Air Force to move onto supers coming out of the weekend.
But the Falcons got to this point of a rematch with the Longhorns by knocking off the Conference-USA Tournament Champion Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on the afternoon of June 5. Air Force beat Louisiana Tech by the final score of 9-7 to keep them alive in Austin.
David Pierce and No. 9 Texas baseball to face Air Force for a second time in the Austin Regional
This will also be the fourth time that Pierce and the Longhorns have faced this dangerous Air Force squad this season. Texas owns a record of 2-1 heading into this meeting with Air Force on the night of June 5.
When these two teams faced each other on June 3, Texas got the best of Air Force by the commanding final score of 11-3. Texas followed that up by knocking off Louisiana Tech in their second game of the Austin Regional by the final score of 5-2.
Moreover, this will definitely be a game where Ivan Melendez and the Texas bats need to come up big. Melendez and the Longhorns already had the likes of Pete Hansen and Lucas Gordon pitch some solid games against Air Force and Louisiana Tech once this weekend. The pitching staff could use the continued run support from the bats, especially the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year Melendez.
The first pitch time between Texas and Air Force at the Disch on June 5 in this Austin Regional is set for 7 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on the Longhorn Network, also available to stream on ESPN+, depending on your TV package and subscription to the service.
