For the second time in his collegiate career to date, the former Texas football three-star recruit and redshirt junior defensive lineman Daniel Carson has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and found a new home. This will actually be the third different college that Carson has attended since his career began with Texas back in 2018.

Carson spent two years with the Longhorns, only one of which resulted in him taking any actual defensive snaps. He wound up taking 20 defensive snaps with Texas back during the 2019 season after redshirting in 2018.

Following the 2019 season, Carson put his name in the transfer portal for the first time before landing with FCS Western Illinois. Carson played for Western Illinois for the last two seasons, where he got nearly 500 defensive snaps under his belt.

Carson was never a full-time starter for Western Illinois, but he did show some steady improvement with a gradual rise in his role over the course of the last two years.

Yet, the steady improvement from Carson didn’t keep him around at Western Illinois for more than the last two seasons. He put his name in the transfer portal for the second time in his career this offseason, before landing with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the ACC.

Carson announced on his Twitter timeline on June 11 that he committed to Georgia Tech out of the transfer portal. Georgia Tech was really busy in the portal so far this offseason, and it looks like defensive line depth was a particular point of emphasis.

Georgia Tech won’t be getting an immediate impact starter along the defensive line out of the 6-foot-4 and 290-pound interior defensive lineman Carson in all likelihood. But he is an experienced and steadily-improving defensive lineman that will add some depth on the interior.

Over the course of his three seasons playing for Texas and Western Illinois, Carson racked up 19 combined tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and eight quarterback pressures. His most productive campaign came last fall where he had a little more than a dozen combined tackles, one sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss in bits and pieces of seven games played.

Carson was originally a three-star recruit hailing out of William Christian High School in Independence, MO, before signing with the Longhorns’ 2018 class. He will have two seasons of eligibility remaining at Georgia Tech.
