We have reached that critical point of the offseason where second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian is trying to get things going for Texas football recruiting in the midst of official visit season. Texas won’t have a bigger point of the offseason on the recruiting trail than we have right now during the summer visit season.

Sark and the Longhorns staff started out this loaded visit season last weekend with a few big-time names on campus including four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr. and five-star Carlsbad (CA) quarterback Julian Sayin. And this weekend is going to be much more crucial for the Longhorns compared to the previous one.

Texas is set to host one particularly enormous target of their 2023 recruiting class, and a few more that are key to filling out the class the way Sark and his staff would like ahead of the fall.

The main target on campus to watch this weekend will obviously be the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning. There are others such as four-star South Oak Cliff cornerback Malik Muhammad and four-star Langham Creek wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway that are worth watching among the official visitors in Austin this weekend. But Manning is going to command the spotlight throughout the weekend.

Which visiting recruits in June could commit to Texas football before the end of the month?

Yet, what comes out of these major visit weekends for the Longhorns is yet to be known beyond one commitment from the three-star Mater Dei tight end Spencer Shannon. Who else could the Longhorns nab a commitment from among the June visitors?

One of the newest targets to keep an eye on among the recent offers from the Longhorns 2024 class is the rising four-star Durant (OK) defensive lineman Xadavien Sims. This touted out-of-state product picked up an offer from Texas just last weekend following his unofficial visit to Austin that went well by all accounts in the last few days.

Last weekend definitely wasn’t the first unofficial visit for Sims to Austin, though. He also visited Texas unofficially twice since last fall. This was also the second unofficial visit for Sims to the Forty Acres since spring camp. He also visited back on April 16.

But the scholarship offer proves the priority that defensive line coach Bo Davis and the Longhorns are placing on the recruitment of Sims early on. And given the fact that Texas has so many visits in the books already with Sims, you’d have to consider them one of the, if not the top school, for Sims heading into the summer.

Some other schools to watch this summer in the race to land a commitment from Sims early on are the Oklahoma Sooners, Michigan State Spartans, and Texas A&M Aggies.

If Davis and the Longhorns can capture some lightning in a bottle with this recruitment, then it could be interesting to see what happens with Sims on the trail this summer.
