3 Texas football freshmen standing out early in summer workouts
There is a lot going on right now for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program early in summer workouts simultaneous to a busy stretch of the offseason on the recruiting trail. Sark and his staff are currently hosting a crucial set of official visitors among targets of the 2023 recruiting class, namely the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning.
Yet, there are other storylines that are still important to note at this point of the offseason. Sark and the Longhorns staff just welcomed more than a dozen summer enrollees to campus ahead of workouts. All of these new additions to the program among the summer enrollees don’t have all that much time to get acclimated with the rest of the team.

That doesn’t mean, though, that these summer enrollees won’t be asked to make an early impact for the Longhorns this fall. Some of these summer enrollees, especially among the additions via the NCAA Transfer Portal and the touted group of incoming freshmen offensive linemen, will be asked to make an impact right away this coming season.
With that in mind, here’s a look at three freshmen for the Longhorns standing out in summer workouts that will be counted upon this fall.
Kelvin Banks, OT
There are two summer enrollees along the offensive line, in particular, that will likely be counted on right away to help this group in the trenches. Five-star incoming freshman offensive tackle Kelvin Banks and offensive guard Devon Campbell could wind up both being starters in the trenches for offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood and the Longhorns by season’s end.
Banks is one name to watch in summer workouts, though. From what we’ve heard coming out of summer workouts thus far, Banks and Campbell are both making a positive impression on the coaches.
A report from Chip Brown of Horns247 last week (paid content) mentions Banks as one of the offensive linemen in particular that are standing out to the coaching staff. That is something of note if Banks is able to make a big enough impression to get consideration as a potential starter at one of the offensive tackle spots in fall camp. It could certainly be the path that Banks is on if he can show he’s ready to face Power Five-caliber competition in the trenches in just a few months.
