What could be the final shot for head coach David Pierce and No. 9 Texas baseball to stay alive in the postseason will arrive on June 19 when they take on the in-state rival and No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies in a loser’s bracket game in the College World Series. Texas and Texas A&M will reignite the Lone Star Showdown for the second time this season, just with more stakes involved this time.

On June 19, the winner of this Lone Star Showdown game in the College World Series in Omaha, NE, will continue on their path to possibly win a title. Meanwhile, the loser will go home.

The first time that the Longhorns and Aggies met on the baseball diamond this season came back on March 29 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin. Texas A&M got the best of Texas in that high-scoring game by the final score of 12-9.

Moreover, Texas got to the loser’s bracket in the College World Series by falling short to the unseeded and red-hot Notre Dame Fighting Irish on June 17 by the final score of 7-3. Notre Dame continued their path of upsets entering the weekend after toppling the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers in the Knoxville Super Regional last weekend.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M found its way to the loser’s bracket by falling short to the unseeded Big 12 Tournament champion Oklahoma Sooners on June 17 by the final score of 13-8. That was the ninth straight loss in the College World Series for the Aggies.

Both the Longhorns and Aggies falling short in the opening round of the College World Series obviously adjusted each team’s odds in Omaha down. Here’s a look at what the odds look like for each team in the CWS and for this high-stakes Lone Star Showdown in Omaha on June 19.

Texas baseball vs. Texas A&M opening odds

According to WynnBet, Texas is a 1.5-run favorite over Texas A&M in the opening odds for this game. And the over/under is set at 13 runs.

At one point in time, Texas was the odds-on favorite to win the College World Series title. Those odds have obviously fallen after the loss to Notre Dame. Texas now has the second-lowest odds to win the College World Series, ahead of only Texas A&M.

Notre Dame is now the College World Series favorite, shortly followed by the Sooners in second place.

Texas beating Texas A&M would put them squarely back in the mix to contend for the College World Series title, though. It would be bittersweet for the Longhorns to both advance in Omaha while handing the Aggies their 10th straight loss in the CWS.

Yet, a loss to the Aggies would put a lot of pressure on Pierce and the Longhorns after what would be a tough ousting in Omaha. There was a lot of blame placed on Pierce and Pete Hansen both for the loss to Notre Dame on June 17. Fair or not, you would think Pierce really needs a win over Texas A&M to build confidence for this team coming out of this weekend in Omaha.
