One of the key recruits that the Longhorns hosted for an official visit over the weekend was the prospect that was the first commit that stuck in this 2023 class. Four-star Arlington-Seguin safety Jamel Johnson got an official visit in with Texas this weekend after taking an unofficial with new head coach Billy Napier and the Florida Gators on June 6.

Considering the fact that Johnson hasn’t closed down his recruitment and is still taking some visits with other competing schools on the recruiting trail this summer goes to show that this was an important time for the Texas staff to gauge his status with them. And it sounds like Texas got a good bit of reassurance as to the status of the commitment of Johnson in the last couple of days.

A report from Justin Wells of Inside Texas coming out of this visit weekend (paid content) shows more confidence in the position that the Longhorns hold with Johnson than they had heading into this official.

If Texas can keep Johnson’s commitment firm once his round of summer trips is wrapped up, that will be a good sign that this staff can keep him around heading into the first signing period.

A few of the other schools that were making pushes for Johnson during the spring were the USC Trojans, Arkansas Razorbacks, TCU Horned Frogs, and LSU Tigers. I would particularly keep an eye on LSU, TCU, and Arkansas among the schools that could keep pushing on Johnson heading into the fall.

Texas did a nice job during the weekend keeping Johnson’s focus on the Forty Acres. But keeping his commitment firm is still a work in progress by my estimation with Johnson for the rest of the summer.
