3 Big 12 commits Texas football is hosting for visits in June
Billy Walton, EDGE
Potentially the most interesting visitor this month among those that are committed to other Big 12 schools is the three-star South Oak Cliff edge rusher/weak-side defensive end Billy Walton. There was a point in time when the Longhorns looked like they were setting the pace in the recruitment of Walton. But in the last few months, some of the priority among edge rushers went elsewhere for Texas, especially with the likes of Colton Vasek and Braylan Shelby.
That’s largely what led to Walton’s interests turning elsewhere once Texas started to prioritize some other edge rushers.
On April 26, head coach Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys landed a commitment from Walton. Oklahoma State landed this commitment from Walton after an official visit to Stillwater that went about as good as it could at the time. The Pokes really pushed all the right buttons with Walton in the last couple of months, leading to his post-spring ball recruitment back in late April.
It looks like Walton is keeping his recruitment open throughout the summer. He took an official visit with the SMU Mustangs last weekend, and he’ll be taking an official visit with the Longhorns starting on June 24.
Texas is really pushing with Walton now. And this official visit will be the opportunity that the Longhorns need to make a big move in the recruitment of Walton. Move the needle enough with Walton and his camp this weekend and we could see the connection between Chris Gilbert and this Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex product really flourish for the rest of the summer.
This weekend will be a big test of Texas’ interest in Walton and the ability to make an impression on him as he keeps exploring his options throughout this recruitment during the summer. Texas is among a few schools trying to pursue this underrated Oklahoma State commit which also includes the Tennessee Volunteers and SMU.
