Rueben Owens, RB

The other new Louisville commit that we mentioned in this list that really should have some attention on Texas now is the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens. Most Longhorns fans would think that the opportunity of getting to play with Arch would be more than enough to get Owens interested in essentially re-committing to Texas.

But that process would likely take many months to play out at this point if and when Texas was able to flip Owens back to their 2023 class.

Owens shocked the college football recruiting landscape earlier this week when he announced a commitment to Louisville over other top schools such as the Texas A&M Aggies, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas, and Georgia, among others.

But most of the discussion surrounding the status of Owens’ commitment to Louisville would lead many to think that he is anything but firm with the Cardinals entering the fall. And just knowing Owens’ personality and apparent liking of the recruiting process in general, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Texas stay firmly in the mix in the race to ultimately seal a commitment from this touted running back.

It now appears that running backs coach Tashard Choice and the Longhorns are making the highly touted four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr. their top priority in the 2023 class. But if Baxter doesn’t work out in the end for the Longhorns, reigniting consistent communication with Owens would be a logical move for this coaching staff.
