Stewart Mandel hints at Arch Manning eventually pushing out Quinn Ewers
Groundbreaking quarterback news is becoming almost a quarterly occurrence for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program in the last eight or 10 months. In the last six or seven months alone, Texas has landed commitments from the former Ohio State Buckeyes freshman transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers and now the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning.
The latest addition that Sark, quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee, and the Longhorns is also the biggest news to arrive on the recruiting trail for this program under this current coaching regime. On June 23, Texas officially landed a commitment from Arch just a few days after his official visit to Austin concluded last weekend.
The impact that the shockwaves of this commitment for Arch to the Longhorns will continue to play out in the next few weeks and months. And we could start to see the potential impact of the commitment of Arch to Texas take place for Sark and the Longhorns staff on the recruiting trail as soon as the next few days.
Texas is set to host roughly a dozen big-time targets of the 2023 class for official visits this coming weekend. We could see some other potential commitments come about for the Longhorns as soon as this weekend, if not sooner.
But there is also an impact that the commitment from Arch will have on the actual Longhorns team in the next six or 12 months.
The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel implies Texas football won’t have Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning in the same QB room in 2023
Stewart Mandel of The Athletic gave his take on the impact that a commitment from Arch could have on the Longhorns in a post on Twitter on June 23. Mandel essentially insinuated that Arch and Ewers won’t be teammates in 2023.
That is certainly an interesting take given how highly touted Ewers is for the Longhorns after landing him out of the NCAA Transfer Portal early this offseason.
While it’s certainly interesting to pontificate on the possibilities of the Texas quarterback room in 2023, when Arch arrives on campus in Austin, it’s hard to see this scenario from Mandel playing out. One major reason why it’s difficult to see this situation playing out is the fact that Ewers actually helped to recruit Arch, especially during his official visit to Austin last weekend.
Ewers likely wouldn’t help push for Manning to commit to Texas as much as he did if he didn’t want to be in the same quarterback room as him in 2023.
Another factor that makes this take from Mandel seem doubtful is the thought that Arch would be fine with redshirting for his first year in college. That would give Ewers potentially two years as the Texas starting quarterback (in 2022 and 2023) before taking his talents to the NFL.
Arch could then be in line to win the starting quarterback job as a redshirt freshman during the 2024 season. Texas could have a clean transition between two No. 1 rated recruits in the nation at the quarterback position, which will help to provide more stability elsewhere in the program.
There are a few other reasons I could think of that makes this take from Mandel seem unlikely. But the fact of the matter is that the impact this will have on Ewers’ potentially leaving the program in 2023 isn’t too likely right now, and should be considered an afterthought regardless.
Arch committing to Texas brings the Longhorns 2023 class up to eight recruits. At the moment, Arch is now the lone five-star commit in the 2023 class, with more to be potentially added in the near future with Sark’s top target in the mix heading into the fall.
