Tyrese Hunter

Tyrese Hunter was the Big-12 Freshman of the Year last season as he led the Iowa State Cyclones to their first Sweet Sixteen Appearance since 2016. As one of the most coveted transfers of the offseason, Hunter chose Beard and the Longhorns over the likes of Gonzaga, Kansas, Louisville, Purdue, and Tennessee.

During his Big-12 Freshman of the Year campaign, Hunter averaged 11.0 points, 4.9 assists, and 3.5 rebounds. Although his slash line was poor (.391/.274/.687), Hunter was forced into trying to carry an abysmal Cyclone offense for long stretches.

Listed at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, Hunter does not have great size for the NBA. He makes up for it with his explosive athleticism. Hunter has a phenomenal change of pace and uses it at opportune times to attack the rim. When he gets to the rim, he plays much bigger than his 6-foot-1 stature and will rise up against opposing centers.

Tyrese Hunter is a great playmaker and an even better athlete. If he wants to find success at the next level he will have to put countless hours in the gym working on his jump shot. I do believe that playing next to collegiate stars such as Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr, Hunter will see his efficiency rise.

NBA Draft Room has Hunter rated as their fourth-best point guard in the 2023 NBA Draft class and slotted as a late-first to mid-second round selection.
