Derion Gullette, EDGE

Likely the top priority among edge rushers for the Longhorns 2023 class this summer is the highly touted four-star Marlin (TX) EDGE Derion Gullette. Texas is making it known how much they want Gullette in the mix in this 2023 class. And that has helped the likes of Sark and co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski get a bit of a leg up in this recruitment.

Gullette is taking his official visit to Texas this weekend, which will round out the three summer trips that he currently has on the books. The other two official visits he took were with the Oklahoma Sooners (June 3) and Ohio State Buckeyes (June 10).

And it still wouldn’t surprise me if Texas A&M eventually gets Gullette on campus for an official visit either later this summer or in the fall. Gullette did take an unofficial visit to Texas A&M last weekend. He also has another unofficial visit to Texas A&M set for late next month.

Edge rusher is going to be a real priority for Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns in the 2023 class. Texas did get a good group along the defensive front in the 2022 signing class. But landing a commitment from Gullette would help bolster the pass rush for the Longhorns for years to come.

Moreover, Gullette won’t get to play in his senior season in high school thanks to an unfortunate leg injury he suffered earlier in the year. But that hasn’t slowed the interest in Gullette coming from the Texas side in the last few months.

We’ll see if Texas can start taking steps to close this recruitment down during Gullette’s official visit this weekend. It is important for Texas to start sealing the deal with Gullette before he takes his unofficial visit to Texas A&M on July 29.
