Johntay Cook, WR

One of the top targets on the minds of Longhorns fans everywhere since Sark and his staff landed the huge commitment from Arch is the elite five-star DeSoto wide receiver Johntay Cook. Texas has continued to make Cook their top priority at the wide receiver position in the 2023 class. And that could soon pay dividends in a big way for new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion, Sark, and the Longhorns.

Texas has continued to set the pace in the recruitment of Cook in the last couple of months. And that’s largely what has set the Longhorns apart from the rest of the top schools in the race to land a commitment from Cook since he started his summer trips a few weeks ago.

On June 24, Cook named his top three finalist schools. And that included the last last three schools that Cook has officially visited this month. His top three finalist schools included the Longhorns, Michigan Wolverines, and Oregon Ducks.

A few months ago, it would’ve surprised many that Cook would eliminate other presumed top schools in his recruitment such as Texas A&M and the Ole Miss Rebels. But a better scheme fit and the opportunity to play with Arch in this high-powered Sark offense just looks too appealing for Cook to take his talents elsewhere.

It’s worth noting that Texas has not officially sealed the deal yet with Cook. They still need to make a big impression on him during his multi-day official visit this weekend. But the writing is on the wall that Texas is starting to close this recruitment down this summer.
