Javien Toviano, CB

Among the four recruits on this list that I could see landing in the Longhorns 2023 class when it’s all said and done for this cycle, the most uncertain of the bunch is probably five-star Arlington-Martin cornerback Javien Toviano. There were certainly times in the last 12-18 months when Texas was setting the pace in this recruitment.

But the momentum seems to fade just as fast as it develops in the last six or eight months with Toviano for Joseph and special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks. The possibility still exists that a big push from Texas heading into the fall could swing momentum back in its favor with Toviano.

A combination of a heightened push on the recruiting trail from Banks, Joseph, and the Longhorns along with more success on the field this fall could potentially get Texas back in the driver’s seat with Toviano a few months down the road.

Some other top schools to watch in the race to land a commitment from Toviano are the Michigan Wolverines, Alabama, and Texas A&M.

Malik Muhammad, CB

A top cornerback recruit in the Longhorns 2023 class that does have more momentum with this coaching staff at the moment is the continually-rising five-star South Oak Cliff DB Malik Muhammad. Texas had a very successful official visit with the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex product Muhammad last weekend.

That will put some pressure on Texas A&M defensive backs coach TJ Rushing for the rest of the summer as Texas is pushing really hard for Muhammad of late. And that looks to be something that is really moving the needle for Muhammad as his official visit date approaches with the Aggies.

We will be watching both the development of the decision timeline for Muhammad along with how his official visit to Texas A&M goes when that date arrives on July 29.

All in all, it wouldn’t surprise me if Texas is able to pull this one out if momentum keeps trending their way the way it has with Muhammad in the last few weeks.
