Texas football adds fast-rising OT in former TCU commit Trevor Goosby
Offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood was able to add a whopping four commits in the trenches in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class since the afternoon of June 26. During a massive weekend for Texas on the recruiting trail, the offensive line took hold of the spotlight since the commitment of the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning back on June 23.
Flood, head coach Steve Sarkisian, and the Longhorns got the fifth commitment of June 26 and the seventh since June 23 by flipping three-star Melissa offensive tackle Trevor Goosby from the TCU Horned Frogs to round out the weekend. Goosby was committed to the Horned Frogs since April 26.
But Flood and the Longhorns kept on this recruitment in the last few months, including two visits that Goosby took to Texas in the last couple of weeks alone. Texas clearly made keeping a spot open for Goosby a priority, despite the massive wave of momentum for Flood and the Longhorns along the offensive line on the recruiting trail this weekend.
Goosby officially flipped his commitment from TCU to Texas to wrap up his official visit to Austin on the night of June 26. The announcement came from Goosby via his Twitter timeline to round out the weekend.
This is a big win for Texas to land a commitment from Goosby for a few reasons. First and foremost, Texas had near perfect timing on this recruitment given some of the other players getting in on the recruitment of Goosby in the last couple of months.
Both the Texas A&M Aggies and Oklahoma Sooners tried to throw their hat in the ring with Goosby in the last few months. And while the offer from the Aggies, along with a recent unofficial visit, looked to make an impact with Goosby, it didn’t measure up with the pitch that the Longhorns gave him.
Texas looks to have jumped in on Goosby at the perfect time around the commitment of Arch, along with the other in-state offensive linemen in the mix as of the end of the day on June 26.

Another reason why this commitment from Goosby is big for the Longhorns is the fact that his evaluation continues to look better and better this offseason. As Goosby continues to develop his athleticism and add more size to his frame, he keeps checking more and more respects as a Power Five-caliber offensive tackle that can make an early impact for Texas.

The physical traits that the 6-foot-6 and 280-pound in-state OT Goosby brings to the table are pretty underrated. It’s evident on film that Goosby is a rapidly-improving athlete that continues to get better and better in terms of holding his own against a sizable defensive lineman and in terms of finishing his blocks at multiple levels of the defense.
You can see between his football and basketball film that Goosby is a very gifted athlete in multiple respects. He’s got excellent foot speed and fluidity that will allow him to thrive in the modern fast-paced offense under Sark.
Despite putting on more than 20 pounds since the end of his sophomore year at Melissa High School, Goosby doesn’t look to have lost any of the foot speed that made him an impressive offensive tackle in film in that respect. Goosby is able to maintain that fluidity while adding muscle to his frame in a short span of time, which will be a valuable aspect of his physical traits once he arrives in Austin.
Moreover, Goosby looks like a well-rounded offensive tackle blocking for the pass. He’s able to quickly pick up his blocking assignments, regardless if he’s blocking in more of a spread or pro-style offensive scheme. Most of what he plays in is a spread offense, but he still flashes on film in terms of his ability to hold up the pocket when his quarterback lines up under center.
Goosby’s arm length (a whopping 83-inch wingspan) and fluidity allow him to get low and latch onto even some of the quicker and more powerful defensive ends and/or edge rushers.
Yet, where Goosby needs to improve the most is with his strength and run blocking. While Goosby has put on a good amount of size in the last year or so, he should still probably put on at least 10-15 more pounds before taking his talents to the collegiate level.
Goosby has also dealt with some injury issues at Melissa, which you would hope get smoothed out with some work with Texas in the weight room whilst adding some size to his frame. That roadblock has likely caused some of the challenges with Goosby’s developments in terms of finishing his blocks at multiple levels of the defense and consistently picking up on concepts in run-blocking schemes.
There are times when Goosby can seemingly get caught away from the ball in run-blocking, which causes him to get away from where he is needed to open up lanes for the ball carrier. A combination of development in more consistent run-blocking schemes and adding size to his frame should allow Goosby to become a more effective run blocker at the next level.
Goosby likely projects as an offensive tackle that could compete for some early reps in college if he can stay healthy and continue to add effective mass to his frame before next offseason. Add 10-15 pounds to his frame and show strides in areas where improvement is needed in his game this fall and Goosby could become an early impact lineman that brings blue-chip level value to the table for Flood and the Longhorns at the offensive tackle position.
Texas is now up to four commits along the offensive line in one day alone. Goosby is the second-highest-rated offensive line commit of the day, behind the touted four-star Harker Heights (TX) offensive tackle Jaydon Chatman. Flood and the Longhorns did a nice job on this day likely adding two interior offensive linemen in Connor Stroh and Andre Cojoe and two offensive tackles in Chatman and Goosby.
