Word of how this big-time official visit weekend for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff hosting some top targets of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class is starting to come out. That includes the news of how the official visit weekend went for Texas with some of the top defensive recruits in this 2023 class.

Among the top defensive targets of the Longhorns 2023 class on campus for an official visit in Austin this weekend is the touted four-star Friendswood (TX) edge rusher Braylan Shelby. Texas is locked in a battle with new head coach Lincoln Riley, assistant/OLB coach Roy Manning, and the USC Trojans on the recruiting trail among the top schools for Shelby this summer.

But it looks like this official visit for Shelby to Austin this weekend really helped Texas make a big move in this recruitment. Texas looked to make a very positive impression on Shelby and his camp in the last couple of days. That could be the case so much so that Texas could now be setting the pace in this recruitment coming out of the weekend.

Texas football now on top for 4-Star EDGE Braylan Shelby?

A report from Steve Wilftong of 247Sports on June 26 (paid content) saw Shelby mention that Texas essentially is the top school for him coming out of his official with co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns. Texas looks to have made one of the biggest moves this weekend with Shelby among all the official visitors on campus.

This is big for Texas if they can continue to hold onto this momentum on the recruiting trail with Shelby in the next couple of weeks. USC had a seemingly successful official visit with Shelby last weekend. And Texas likely was able to get the focus back on them with Shelby in the last couple of days.

Depending on how this decision timeline comes together for Shelby, getting the last official visit among what he currently has on the books for this summer will be massive for the Longhorns. Texas and USC were the only two schools that Shelby visited officially this summer, making his recruitment boil down to a clear top two.

After landing two commits in the last four days from the elite five-star Isidore Newman quarterback Arch Manning and the touted four-star Kahuku (HI) linebacker Liona Lefau, Texas is up to nine recruits in the 2023 class. And the momentum that Texas currently has on the recruiting trail in the 2023 class could see more activity take place in the next few days and/or weeks.
