Troy Tulowitzki passing on USC job, set to leave Texas baseball
Bad news arrived for both the Texas baseball program and the USC Trojans this weekend concerning the five-time MLB All-Star and assistant coach Troy Tulowitzki. The third-year Texas volunteer assistant Tulowitzki was in the running to land the USC head coaching job this month. He looked to be on a shortlist of top candidates for the Trojans in the last week or so.
But a report from Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball on Twitter early in the afternoon of June 26 indicates that Tulo won’t be taking the USC head coaching job this offseason. This report also noted that Tulo won’t be returning to the Texas coaching staff under head coach David Pierce for the 2023 season.
That is big news for both the Longhorns and Trojans programs as Tulo is a big name that is rising around the college baseball landscape. Tulo contributed to a lot of the success that this Texas staff found for the program in the last couple of seasons.
Texas baseball set to lose former volunteer assistant Troy Tulowitzki
Tulo helped see the Longhorns make two straight College World Series appearances. The former Longhorn was likely in line to get a more prominent role on this coaching staff ahead of next season. But it does look like (as HornSports mentioned on Twitter) that Tulo is looking to just find the best fit for him with his next coaching job, whether that be at the collegiate or professional level.
It did seem like only a matter of time before Tulo got a bigger role. He appears to be a rising star in the college baseball coaching ranks.
Pierce and the Longhorns losing Tulo makes it yet another key departure from this coaching staff early on this offseason. Texas also parted ways with the now-former pitching coach Sean Allen following a tumultuous 2022 campaign on the mound for this squad.
There are now two big-time holes on this coaching staff that Piece will have to fill this offseason.
Texas finished up the 2022 season with two straight losses in the College World Series at the hands of the unseeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish and five-seed Texas A&M Aggies. That gave Piece and the Longhorns a record of 47-22 (14-10 Big 12) to end the 2022 campaign.
