Johntay Cook, WR

We just mentioned Cook on this list as someone to watch in connection with the Longhorns 2023 class coming out of last weekend’s important official visits. Texas has clearly made Cook the top priority at the wide receiver position in the 2023 class for the last year or so at least.

And the priority that new wide receivers coach/passing game coordinator Brennan Marion, special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks, and the Longhorns have given Cook should pay off before too long. Cook knows how important he is for the Longhorns, and it is likely only a matter of time before he’s ready to join this class.

While Texas looks to be the top school for Cook at the moment, it’s always difficult to pin down the exact decision timeline that the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex native is on. He just announced his top three finalist schools on Twitter heading into his official visit to Texas last weekend. Texas was included in the top three which also encompassed the Michigan Wolverines and Oregon Ducks.

It’s hard to see a scenario where Michigan and/or Oregon did enough on their official visits with Cook to move the needle to the point where Texas isn’t the top school at this point of the summer.

What really moved the needle for the Longhorns with Cook, though, is clearly the addition of Arch in the 2023 class. Texas might still have gotten Cook without landing a commitment from Arch. With Arch in the mix now, that goes a long way to helping Texas seal the deal in this recruitment for good.
