The hot streak continued for second-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class early this week. Texas landed the 15 and 16th commits in the 2023 class on the nights of June 27 and June 28. The 15th commit for Texas in the 2023 class arrived with the announcement that came on social media from the elite five-star Westgate (LA) safety Derek Williams.

It’s hard to overstate how big this commitment is for the Longhorns in the 2023 class. This is fantastic for cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph and safeties coach Blake Gideon to get a recruit the caliber of Williams to be a staple of the secondary in the 2023 class.

And then, the Longhorns added another important commitment in the 2023 class from the hybrid three-star South Oak Cliff edge rusher and former Oklahoma State Cowboys pledge Billy Walton. As the 16th commit in the Longhorns 2023 class, Walton also gives Texas the first edge rusher in the mix.

Who’s up next for Texas football after landing 3-Star EDGE Billy Walton?

With Texas landing so many commitments in the last five days, it seems like the possibilities are limitless for the Longhorns 2023 class in the next few weeks. Texas has more than doubled the size of the 2023 class since early last week.

Here’s a look at a prediction of the next commit up in the Longhorns 2023 class after landing Williams and Walton early this week.

Jordan Matthews, CB

For a good while now, the Longhorns looked like the frontrunner in the race to land a commitment from the touted four-star Woodlawn (LA) cornerback Jordan Matthews. Texas has one of the longstanding relationships built with Matthews, which is something that should be credited to cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph.

Joseph and the Longhorns continue to be a major topic of conversation on the recruitment of Matthews this summer. A large reason for that is the fact that Texas has yet to get an official visit on the books with Matthews.

As Texas has gone through some really big official visit weekends this month, one name that was missing from those lists was Matthews’. But it looks like Texas and the Alabama Crimson Tide are still in line to get official visits from the talented Louisiana cornerback by the fall.

It seems like the chief competition to watch right now for the Longhorns in the race to land a commitment from Matthews are Alabama and the Tennessee Volunteers. Matthews officially visited Tennessee last weekend, which appears to be a major hit with him and his camp in the days since that wrapped up.

When Texas is able to get Matthews to campus for an official visit at some point in the next few months, it will be interesting to see if Joseph and this staff can seal the deal on this one for good.
