Terrance Green, DL

Among the defensive line targets of the Longhorns 2023 class visiting Austin later this month, the highest priority looks to be the highly touted four-star Cy Woods defensive lineman Terrance Green. Texas was recently included among the top five finalist schools for Green. And Texas has made nothing but gains in this recruitment in the last month or so.

Texas is also set to host Green on an unofficial visit during the BBQ weekend on July 30-31.

There is an interesting situation brewing in the Longhorns 2023 class, though, between Green and four-star Bergen Catholic (NJ) defensive lineman Sydir Mitchell. Texas is also heavily pursuing Mitchell this summer, and that could create some tightness in terms of numbers on the interior defensive line in the 2023 class.

There might be an approach here that sees Texas only take the first of Green or Mitchell to commit to this 2023 class in the next month or so. And given how it looks like Mitchell could be arriving at a decision in the next couple of weeks, there could be some pressure on Green if he does want into the Longhorns 2023 class.

If Texas is looking to take two interior defensive linemen that fit the bill of what Mitchell and/or Green bring to the table, then the latter of those two should clearly be a take in the 2023 class. But there is also a world where Texas takes Green as more of a true defensive tackle, which would likely mean he stays closer to his current size instead of putting on at least 20-25 more pounds in muscle mass.

What the 6-foot-5 and 275-pound Green brings to the table is a strong and long defensive lineman that can be disruptive defending the run and rushing the passer. Green is also long and athletic enough to get his hands up in the passing lanes and knock the ball down at the line of scrimmage often.

Green is also able to change directions quickly for how big his frame is. That allows him to adjust quickly to get off blocks when the ball carrier is trying to hit the adjacent gap to him, or when the quarterback is trying to escape from a collapsing pocket.

There is a lot to like about what Green brings to the table. He already profiles as a Power Five starter early on in his collegiate career. But the main question with him in the Longhorns 2023 class will be how the numbers stack up in the end for Davis and this staff.
