Cedric Baxter Jr., RB

Likely the top remaining skill position target at this point of the offseason for Sark and the Longhorns in the 2023 class is the insanely talented four-star Edgewater (FL) running back Cedric Baxter Jr. Texas appears to be all in on the recruitment of Baxter this summer after the former Horns commit and elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens committed to the Louisville Cardinals a few weeks ago.

Baxter is the third key target of the Longhorns 2023 class where it looks like the main competitor on the recruiting trail will be Texas A&M. Texas does still appear to hold the lead in this recruitment after a very successful official visit for Baxter to Austin back on the weekend of June 10. But it does look like Texas A&M made up some ground when they hosted Baxter on an unofficial visit to College Station back on June 23.

New running backs coach Tashard Choice has a very solid relationship built with Baxter and his camp. And that relationship with Baxter for Choice traces back to his time as the running backs coach with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

This bond that Choice has with Baxter and his camp will be put to the test as the Aggies throw everything they have at this recruitment this summer.

Choice and the Longhorns still need to close this one out in the next few weeks as Baxter is down to a group of four finalist schools that also includes the Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, and Texas A&M.

Baxter is set to make a decision on Aug. 10. And unless there is some major change or a really effective last-minute push from another top school in his recruitment, Texas should remain the favorite in this one.
